Yamanouchi area in Nagano is the home of the ever-popular Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park where Japanese monkeys discovered the wonders of dipping in natural hot springs. It’s pretty cool considering no one really knows when they actually started to take baths. There were many stories about it, but one thing\u2019s for sure, they saw humans repeatedly enter the warm pool of water and decided to check it out, like the curious monkeys they were. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shibu Onsen is one of those places that pop up whenever you search for the snow monkeys. There is much more to it than just monkeys though. Just like most onsen villages, Shibu onsen has been around for centuries and you can tell from the town\u2019s antique buildings and cobblestone streets. Alongside another onsen village just next to it, the Yudanaka Onsen is similar with its long running history but just a bit more accessible with its own train station as this serves as the gateway to the Yamanouchi area in Nagano. One can guess that this long history of the onsen villages captured the curiosity of the monkeys to try it for themselves. The Snow Monkey Park was established so they can have their own personal hot spring bath deep in the mountains, but it didn\u2019t stop some monkeys from occasionally taking a stroll in the town though. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The area also brings great panoramic views of the several mountains in the Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. Depending on the season of your visit, you can either be welcomed by the pink cherry blossoms lined up along the riverside or be greeted by the biting winter breeze from the mountains. The mountain range in the area is also the home of the largest ski resort in Japan, Shiga Kogen. Also, you\u2019ll probably spot some areas as it\u2019s a common setting with some Japanese ski movies. The area is quite famous as it has also been the main venue for the 1998 Nagano Olympics. Either winter season or green season, the mountain area can be enjoyed all year long. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since there is a bus service that goes around from Nagano station, the two Onsen villages, the famous snow monkey park, and the ski resorts in Shiga Kogen are all accessible through either the local bus service, or chartered buses. Having all these prime locations in one area makes the Yamanouchi a prime destination for everyone. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
