Hakuba: A life by the northern Japan Alps

One of the famous places in Japan for skiing is Hakuba Valley. At the base of the northern Japanese alps, it’s pretty much a haven for many ski enthusiasts. It’s quite famous for mountaineering, both in green and winter seasons. With its increasing popularity, it does get crowded at the popular ski resorts like Happo-one and Goryu but the valley does have 10 ski resorts to choose from.

There’s this vibe in Hakuba that is cool, wild and still feels like you’re in Japan. The wildness comes from the panoramic view of the northern alps, if you have been blessed by clear skies that is. The moment you arrive, you get slapped in the face by the awesome view of the mountain range. Either coming from JR Hakuba station, entering the valley through car, the long stretch of the ~2000m mountain range is a treat for the eyes. Try night time too! You can faintly see the beautiful mountains under the moonlight.

I love that Hakuba still retains a Japanese feel. You can see it in the local shops and restaurants that feel like grandma’s house. There are even some really old thatched houses in the village. Of course you also have the western communities if you prefer. The variety is something I enjoy the most in the village.

Hakuba Valley doesn’t just stop at Hakuba village. The village is the main base but the mountain range pretty much stretches out of the village with the northern part as Otari Village and the southern part as Omachi city.
