Omachi City: Gateway to the Northern Alps

Omachi city is based just at the entrance or the Northern Japanese Alps and has a long history as previously part of the old Shinano Province. Unlike Hakuba where it really is by the foot of the mountains, Omachi city, at least in the city center, has a certain bit of distance where you do not get as much snow, making it very comfortable to live in.

The city of Omachi played an important role as a part of the Salt Road route which connects Matsumoto city to the Sea of Japan. This route starts from Itoigawa, passing through several points in Otari village, Hakuba-village then Omachi before traveling further south reaching Matsumoto. You’ll see lots old heritage buildings which allowed storage for salt, and resting points for travelers.

Its location is very convenient base for many people. It is at the base city of many trailheads, as travelers stop by before or after their journey. For serious mountaineers, there are trailheads leading to major mountains so it’s better to do your research before trailing ahead. Also it would be best to check updates as this region is a part of the bear territory.

Omachi definitely has so much to offer throughout the year, which is one of the many reasons we fell in love with the area. Before long, we decided to make it our home base, giving us easy access to the outdoor activities we enjoy most. When we’re not out exploring, you’ll usually find us working on various side projects, including the ongoing renovation of an old farmhouse. Join us as we share our adventures and the occasional whim that catches our attention.
